Big Thanks out to William J Snyder III whom found the Bradford County Suicide Task Force to be one of our sponsors while we were on bike route as PR person, he reaching out to everyone for us while we were on the trip. He is a disabled and a person whom loves to give back as he knows the feeling of having limitations and was very happy to help out when he heard about our cause from the first WNEP news cast

I would like to start by introducing ourselves and letting you know what we are doing. My friend Joseph Bacorn and I, Joseph Fiasco are planning to bike across the USA from Dockweiler Beach, California to Long Beach, New York. We are leaving July 3rd from Philadelphia International Airport and we are flying to Los Angelos International Airport. We are planning to complete our trip by August 4th barring there are no delays. We will be riding 50 to 150 miles per day and taking 1 or 2 rest days as we go on the trip to have a little fun and sight see. We are both looking forward to this trip and are hoping for it to be a great success. Any money raised will go to Clinton County Veterans Affairs for Disabled Veterans. We are planning to record the whole ride start to finish and publish it at a later date for purchase. All money made from that will continue to go to Clinton County Veteran Affairs.

LHU students plan bike ride across U.S.
Money will go to disabled American veterans
May 17, 2011
By LANA MUTHLER (lmuthler @lockhaven.com) , The Express
LOCK HAVEN – Two Lock Haven University students will be bicycling across the country this summer to raise money for disabled veterans. And their goal is a lofty one – $250,000.
Joseph Bacorn and Joseph Fiasco plan to leave Dockweiler Beach, Calif. on July 3 and bicycle about 3,400 miles to Long Island, N.Y. They expect the trip to take about 34 days.
Bacorn, 21, is a junior criminal justice/political science major from Montoursville. Fiasco, 18, is a pre-med sophomore from State College majoring in biology/chemistry.
The two met at ROTC and the idea was born.
Fiasco came up with the idea to do something for the disabled veterans and Bacorn, an avid bicyclist, said he’s “always wanted to ride across the United States.”
“My dad is a disabled veteran. We want to raise awareness of the number of disabled veterans who need help… medical and other benefits,” Fiasco said, noting that there are 5.5 million disabled veterans across the United States.
“I’ve always wanted to ride across the United States,” said Bacorn, the more experienced biker of the two.
Local support comes from the Clinton County Veterans Affairs Office which is sponsoring the trip and accepting donations for the duo. The two have also written letters to major corporations and other businesses and are traveling throughout Clinton, Lycoming and Centre counties visiting businesses and organizations for sponsors.
And, they’ve also begun training for the trip as the specially designed bikes purchased from Kearney Cycling in Nebraska have just arrived.
They are enthusiastic and optimistic.
“It’s gonna be a lot of fun,” Bacorn said, adding that the two have done their homework.
They’ve got their route mapped out and have contacted campgrounds, churches and other sites that have offered food and lodging at no cost.
“We’ve really learned a lot. There are so many people who are willing to help us. I can’t believe it,” Bacorn said as he talked about the support they are getting from far and near.
They believe they can average 100 miles a day, but say they plan to do a little sight-seeing along the way, too. On the itinerary are stops at the Grand Canyon, Fort Knox, Fort Leonardwood, various military cemeteries, bases and VA hospitals.
Anyone wishing to make a tax-deductable donation may do so by mailing a check to Clinton County Veterans Affairs, 230 E. Water St., Lock Haven, Pa. 17745. Please write “disabled veterans” on the memo line.
For more information contact Joseph Bacorn at 570-916-2969; Joseph Fiasco at 814-380-2073, or Clinton County Veterans Affairs Director Dave Bower at 570-893-4339.

Was on B94.5 Morning Zoo Crew this morning at 8:30am then had an interview for WNEP-TV at 1pm then over to Williamsport Sun-Gazette for a newspaper interview will be on WNEP within a few mins now… Will be in Sun-Gazette tomorrow!!
Here’s a link to a summary article on WNEP’s website:
Duo Plans Cross-Country Bike Ride
A pair of Joe’s from Central Pennsylvania are gearing up to bike cross-country to raise awareness for disabled veterans.
In just a couple weeks, the two men will embark on the bike-ride of all bike-rides.
Joe Fiasco and Joe Bacorn serve in the Army ROTC at Lock Haven University and one day, decided they would bike from Los Angeles to New York.
“We wanted to raise awareness and some money along the way and we wanted to help out the vets, because that’s why we’re here,” said Bacorn.
The two set up a website and want to help disabled veterans in any way they can.
Joe Fiasco’s dad served in the army and was recently medically discharged after a lengthy three-year process.
“It shouldn’t take that long, they did their time and it shouldn’t take long for them afterwards to get what they deserve,” said Fiasco.
So Joe and Joe started contacting campsites and hotels along the route they picked out and even color-coded a map they will rely on. Any money raised will go to the Clinton County Veterans Affairs Office.
“We just want to give back,” said Bacorn.
All that is left now is to keep training for the month-long journey ahead starting on July 3rd and ending when they reach the Atlantic Ocean.
“We’ve been doing a few hours everyday. It’s hard because we’re working and everything to get in the hours we’d want to,” added Fiasco.
I will put the Sun-Gazette article up tomorrow!
We are getting really excited for this; CAN’T WAIT!!
We made the front page of the sun gazette!
http://www.sungazette.com/page/content.detail/id/565290/Pedaling-for-veterans.html?nav=5011
The Center Daily Times got in touch with me yesterday and our story should be in Friday’s paper so look for it!
So many people have been contacting us and offering to help which is great! I love how helpful people have been.
At this point we no longer need sponsorship so any money donated online to that paypal will be given directly to Clinton County Veteran Affairs at the end of the ride.
We really need more Donors! Don’t forget all donations are Tax-Deductible!
I can still get anyone up on the site that donates or sponsors just get in touch with me!
We are getting our uniforms printed this Friday though so if you want to be on our cycling gear please make your donations soon! Otherwise the best we can do is put you on the site and maybe shirts that we can wear nearer the end of the trip…
Please don’t be afraid to contact me at JFiasco@lhup.edu if your making a contribution and would like to be put on site. If you don’t contact me I’ll assume you don’t want your contribution to be public.
To donate directly to Clinton County Veteran Affairs:
Make a check payable to Clinton County Veteran Affairs with Disabled Veterans in the memo line then mail it to:
IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE ON WEBSITE: Clinton County Veterans Affairs, 230 E. Water St., Lock Haven, Pa. 17745
or
IF YOU WANT TO BE PUT ON WEBSITE: 424 Sylvan Drive, State College, PA 16803
The only reason for that is I need to verify the donations to keep you on site. I dont mind putting you up after email contact but I want to verify to keep you on site. I will take the checks myself directly to Dave at Clinton County Veteran Affairs with our other donations.
I just got off the phone with William Snyder who has offered to help us with raising donations and I would like to give him a big thanks! While not a Veteran he is Disabled and it makes me happy to know that we have had this much of an impact on people. I will be posting more about him later but just wanted to get a thanks out to him and his family now
Hey just wanted to say we are in the CDT today
I will link later because I’m posting from phone.
And a reminder if u haven’t contacted me about sponsoring or donating by 3pm today there is no chance I can get u onto our cycling jerseys/bibs.
I should still be able to get u onto shirts though that will be worn nearer the end of the trip when we make stops.
Not sure anyone has realized it yet, (which is suprising with the 1000 ppl that have seen the site) you can click the comment button below each post on this main page to say things. The front page here is actually a blog.
Okay so I would like to start by saying there are only 4 days left!! I bought the camera for the trip and a bike mount
Testing it out tomorrow and I’ll post footage. Its a Kodak Playsport. Its waterproof and it records in HD. I’m really excited about it. So next BIG THANKS out to Collegiate Pride!!! They are pushing our cycling jerseys through for us and will have them done by Friday! It means so much to us. They are THE print shop for state college area and they are great. In support of our cause they have offered their services to us for free
My next BIG THANKS goes out to The Bicycle Shop in South Williamsport! They have done so much for us for the last few months and have just been really great. If your in the area and are looking for anything bike related they should be your first/only stop!!
The last few things have managed to fall into place perfectly and now we just have a few more things on the way from amazon. It should all be here by friday
Talk about cutting it close
oh well.
At this point I would recommend anyone that wants to do this trip to start planning ATLEAST a year in advance. Even more if its for a cause. I know we pulled this all together in 4 months? But honestly I know if we would have put more time into it we could have been much more prepared and we could have raised alot more money and awareness! I’m really really hoping that we get picked up by a major news source or something soon so we can raise more awareness/money.
I would like to thank everyone for being so supportive and a special thanks out to William Snyder. I mentioned him before but he has been working hard to get us more donations and spread awareness. He has set us up yet another facebook at www.facebook.com/00bikeusa00 I want you all to go check it out and become friends. We will most likely be posting most of our pictures there because its impossible to upload to the site via our phones. We do everything but upload pics to this website sadly.
William Snyder and his family are apart of the Bradford County Suicide Task Force. His email is WSnyder@bikeusa.org If you want to talk to him or donate to his cause as well please feel free to contact him. He may comment on here later to put more information about himself and his cause if he see’s fit.
Well that’s all I can think of right now if I think of anything else I will be sure to post it tomorrow with the video
Thanks to everyone again!
We are at Philadelphia Airport!!! Flight leaving at 550. I would like to give a big thanks to Lyndsay Hepler for giving us ride to the airport!
I would like to thank Scott Conklin, Senator McCain, Dave Bower, LTC Mahoney, Dad, Mom, Chris, and Cadet Sule all of thier help, guidence and kindness getting us this far.
We have a forum set up for anyone that would like to use it at
forum.bikeusa.org
Register and go crazy
I will be reading and replying to anything posted there as I can.
Happy fourth of July everyone!! 92 miles to ride today. Yesterday was good. We missed Galcos Soda Pop Stop by 19 minutes though…It was a slow day tring to navigatet through the city. We passed the ax anime expo which was cool right down the road was the staples center. We should be starting out in the next half hour. Temp was nice yesterday bit warm already today.
Barstow here we come!
Barstow is only 38 miles away now with only a little bit of uphill on old route 66 ^^
We are planing on stopping at Barstow for the night then heading out tomorrow morning by 3 or 4 am to try to keep out of this heat. We are pretty sure we arnt gonna make it to vegas though we are working out an new plan and we will keep you all posted.
Sorry for not posting any pictures on the website but its not possible to upload from our phones onto the site directly. You can see pictures on both of our websites and hopefully on the bikeusa facebooks tonight. We are using Barstow as a rest and catchup day now that the holiday is over we can finally get some supplies hopefully.
Thank you all for your comments and don’t forget to check out the forums at forum.bikeusa.org. Our facebook event and page and our advertisment page at www.facebook.com/00bikeusa00
Today we rode about 8 miles before we saw this neat little diner on route 66. We made it about 10 miles past Barstow and ended up in the ghost town of Calico, not literally a ghost town but it’s definitely depressing. So we actually rode about 48 miles today. The KOA we are staying at is all sand, but there are some trees and bushes. The first thing did was jump in the pool, yes there was a pool in the middle of the desert!
We also met this nice lady and her family and they fed us dinner and told us to come over for breakfast in the morning. They said I we have any problems just to call them because they would be going to Las Vegas the next day in the evening. We aren’t sure about tomorrow because of a few things, there aren’t many places to get water, we have already been kicked off the same highway once earlier even tho we have been told by California Highway Patrol that it would be ok, and lastly the heat, it’s suppose to be around 116 degrees tomorrow. So we will see what happens but if worst comes to worst and we need to hitch a ride we will make the mileage up somewhere else… We’d rather not die due to stubbornness.
Hey all! So we stopped at the Calico Ghost Town the afternoon we got in to Calico, if you’re ever in the area you should visit the site, they only charge 6 dollars to get in and it’s interesting to see what it was like in the 1800′s. But with that said I would never go back=P
So we talked to a lot of locals and fellow travelers to find out that all roads to LV turned to dirt at somepoint or another except I-15 which we have already been kicked off two times! So we rode our bikes about 20 miles out of Calico, CA and this wonderful lady (Kathy) offered us a ride to the next bicycle friendly road. She took us about 70 miles until Jean airport which is about 30 miles out of Vegas. We really had no choice and even on I-15 there weren’t any places to refill on water and it was 116 that afternoon. Hopefully everyone can understand that we really wanted to ride but at the same time had to make a serious decision, we couldn’t do it and getting arrested was not worth it. We plan on making up the mileage in Arizona!
The ride from Jean Airport was a really rough start we were really going slow, and at one point all the sudden we catch a back wind and all the way into Vegas (approx. 25 miles) we were going 25 mph +. Be very careful if you ever decide to ride down the Vegas strip cars do not move over for you.
We arrived at the KOA in Vegas and went to the Treasure Island dinner buffet and called it a night. Big ride the following day!
Hey everyone sorry for the delay in posts, we haven’t had much of any cell service and it’s been raining everyday, apperently it’s “monsoon” season in the desert.
We went to the Hoover Dam and the biggest thing we enjoyed was the ride to the Dam. If you ever go to the Hoover dam it would be worth while to rent bicycles and take the drainage/old railroad path to get there, you get to see lake Mead and go through old railroad tunnels all while going downhill for around 10 miles. You skip traffic you dont have to worry about parking. Maybe have
someone pick you up at the bottom?
Anyways the dam was fantastic and it was definitely worth while, but the trek we encountered from the dam to Kingman Arizona was like no other. It was very hot and extremely mountainous especially towards the begining. The biggest thing we would say about this day is start very early and pack alot of extra water especially whens its hot out and the first 25 miles are terrible mountains. We left Las Vegas at 4 am and did not arrive at kingman until 11 pm with a grand total of 120 miles. The KOA in Kingman was awesome and the people were great and I think it was the manager or the owner (correct me if you know who it was) even got pictures with us before we left the next day=] great people.
Hey all!
We started up late today because we had to stop at a bicycle shop, if you ever go to Kingman be sure to stop at bicycle world, a guy named Jim owns the place and he’s a great guy! Plus he hooked us up! We also went to breakfast at the Rainbow cafe, a great place to grab some local food!
We took a little break and didn’t get going until 1 pm. Route 66 to Peach Springs does not have much of a shoulder but the things you get to see make the route very worth while. It started raining and we took shelter at with a couple of Native Americans under their carport, they were really great and they gave us some really good information on the local area, by the way I think I’m part Cherokee! We started back up about an hour later and not even 5 miles in we hit rain for the next few hours. You must stop at the Hackberry General Store, it has so much interesting things inside that you definitely don’t want to miss out on. We rode 50 miles to a nice little motel in Peach Springs. Just remember that you may look at your map and not see much around but more than likely there’s more around, but I would still highly suggest you plan for the worst.
Hey again, we enjoyed the 85 miles trip to Williams Arizona and we wish we could have went to the Grand Canyon Caverns and the Supai nation, there’s so much to see but not nearly enough time. We got caught in a rainstorm so we hitchhiked for a few miles to get out of the lightning. But they took us back to the spot where we were and we finished the day at Williams. We stayed at the nicest KOA and it was the first time we have seen trees since before we left for the trip!
Williams also has so many nice places to eat, we stopped at the Cruisers Route 66 Cafe. We probably would not recommend that you go to the place we went to eat because there are plenty of old style restaurants that probably have much better food. They also have a gunfight in the streets everynight @ 7pm. I think I’m in love with Williams Arizona.
Today we had breakfast at the Williams KOA, and the food was very good, they gave us great advice and then we packed up and headed down Route 40 West to catch route 64 North to the Grand Canyon. It’s very hilly but also fast, we went the first 15 miles in less than 45 minutes, the rest of the trip was pretty normal all the way to Tusayan with mostly rolling hills, we left at around 8 am and made it to the canyon at 1 pm. Thats with the unfortunate 1st flat tire I had today!
As soon as we got to our campground it looked like it was going to rain, so we got our tent up and everything under it and go figure it didn’t rain. After we got all of that done the campground owner called us to see I we would be interested in a Jeep Tour of the Canyon, apparently the company that does the tours liked what we were doing and wanted to do something for us=] the tour was great and we really wish we had more time here because they also offered us a helicopter tour the following day. Unfortunately we are leaving before when the wanted to give us the tour. The only other really interesting thing we discovered is that we were at one of the only campgrounds that allows campfires!
So we ended up getting a late start today. On the road around 715. We biked from the Grand Canyon Camper Village to the Flinstones place about 22 miles back down 64 toward williams. We stopped and ate at a little resturant accross from the flinstones place because we were making great timing (only took us an hour to get that far) and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. After we ate we came out to find lots of rain clouds in the distance. Hoping to avoid them we hopped back on our bikes and road hard down 180. We got hit here and there by a little rain but managed to avoid the 3 big storm systems! The road was nice. Some up hills and some down for a while then we hit a monster of a mountain and found our selves at 8000 feet before we knew it. That was a 2000 foot climb! It was crazy but it wasn’t too bad. Nothing will ever be as bad as 93 was leaving the hoover dam! We both broke 40 mph coming down the other side which was awesome. About 10 miles from the town we found a very small church along the road that was a neat stop. Its used mainly for marragies as far as we could tell. Flagstaff itself is a biking comunity so people were a lot nicer. We stayed at Woody Mountain Campground for the night, which was really nice. A lot of trees and cool weather.
We got up this morning a bit on the late side and packed up quick. Before we could go though 2 people came up and donated 120$ by check which was nice. We tried to head out after that but Bacorn’s back tire was flat >.> so we had to change that out. We finally got out on the road about 8 and stopped to eat at Galaxy Diner which was great. Good food and it had that classic Route 66 style to it
From there we hit up the bike shop quick to get some CO2 but turns out Bacorn grabbed non threaded in a box. Oh well. We finally got on the road and biked I-40 to a rest stop outside of meteor crator which was a nice place to hide from the sun for a bit. After that we stopped in Winslow which was another nice 66 town. A little run down but still nice. We got to the KOA in Holbrook about 630. I wouldn’t reccomend taking 40 if you can avoid it because the shoulder sucked in some places and there were bee house things about every 10 miles. So about every 10 miles we were praying we wouldn’t get stung and the crosswinds weren’t helping us at all!
So we made it 96 miles to Gallup today! It was a good ride. Had some fun at the welcome sign. Hope to post those pics soon. The shoulder on 40 has been getting progressively worse though. Bacorn had 4 flats today and got a pretty bad cut in a tire so we had to swap them out. We are down to 1 16gram co2 container, 2 tubes and no spare tires! Hopefully we don’t get another flat tomorrow!
I would like to thank my dad, Blaine Fiasco for getting us a hotel room last night at Econo Lodge. It was great to sleep in a bed and even better there was a Taco bell next door!
We used our last Big Air to patch and fill a tire on someones stroller that was in Taco bell. She said it went flat as Bacorn passed her infront of the hotel
he’s just a flat magnet. Oh well. Still got that 16 g hopefully we make it to the next bike shop!!
Hey everyone!
Albuquerque was an extremely long trip, the roads were terrible and yes I had more flats, luckily they were near the end and we got to a bike shop and purchased over $250 in supplies. I had to upgrade my rear tire to a Kevlar type because the flats were slowing me down, Joe F. Had to get a new rear tire because his was just worn out. His tire was worn down to the threads.
We arrived at the KOA after dark and had a hard time getting everything set up and organized, luckily the night manager there Whom was also in the Air Force, helped us out and did some of our laundry for us. We love talking to prior military etc.
125 miles logged 3 flat tires (Joe B) none for Joe F.
Yesterday was very uplifting. Joe and I got up to
an email from KOB channel 4 news asking for an interview in the morning before we left. Of course we said yes and they arrived around 10:30 am. The interview itself went great and the cameraman and reporter were great.
We left for our 55 mile trip to the Santa Fe KOA. We took a couple of wrong turns and ended up on an Indian service road which if you aren’t from the west means stones and/or dirt, and not smooth by any means. But we managed to get back onto the correct route again and made it to the States Capitol.
We got pretty hungry so we stopped in at this place called Harrys Roadhouse and had dinner… More like a bunch of appetizers. And we waited for the nightly news to come on because we didn’t have another way to catch the story. Of course we figured that everyone would notice that was us after watching the clip and then that really sparked conversation in the room. We were just getting ready to pay the bill and leave and our waitress’s came up to let us know that the owner (Harry) has kindly picked up our bill, we honestly weren’t expecting it.
We left the restaurant to go to our campsite which was still 8 miles down the road, terrible headwinds in the late afternoon so it took us quite awhile. About half a mile down the road from where were staying this complete stranger was holding a big American Flag with bottles of water. He was cheering us on and pointed us in the right direction, myself and Joe F. Were caught totally off guard, people really do care and I definitely feel a lot different about our situation now. It really hits home for both of us.
55 miles yesterday! And amazing
Weather!!
It was up and down and up and down with a constant crosswind and then we were surprised when the KOA we were staying at came a few miles ahead of where we thought it was. Our geography can be pretty bad sometimes. We didn’t stop anywhere for lunch so we arrived around 3:30 pm. The owners and all other workers were really great we would definitely recommend you stop there if your ever heading that way.
We met a guy named Gary and he is walking across the United States, he started in Maine and he is traveling all the way to Californaia. He started this trip June 4, 2005 and he doesn’t travel when it’s above 85 degrees or so. So he stops at places he likes and lives in his tent for a few months and then he will walk for months on end. If you have any questions about Gary or you want to support him please drop a comment or message and I will point you in the right direction.
Hey all,
Yesterday was a long day but we were going along fairly
Quick. We made it to Raton and found out that our campground was at the summit of Raton pass which is 100 yards from the Colorado border. We had to ride into the night to get there and ended up logging 118 miles.
The campground was 1 mile away from being charred by a Forrest fire in the area and we were lucky to be getting there after it was put out. The road going to our next destination was closed during the fire and would have made us travel over 100 miles to get to the town of Trinidad, CO which is only a 14 mile trip other wise.
Hey sorry all for not updating. The last few days have been long and hot. It was a nice ride from Raton to La Junta. It was nice to finally get off the Innerstate! We love roads that are nice and quite. We stopped off Fort Carson? Along the way and met some really nice people that gave us water/ice/poweraid. We talked for quite a bit then headed back out. When we got to town we found out there were 15 cyclist already at the KOA so we hurried over to meet them. To our supprise they were all HIGH SCHOOLERS! Apperently they were going cross country as part of a youth program. We wished them best of luck as they got are about to hit the hardest part of their trip. They did tell us that there are two british guys infront of us by a day heading to New York as well! Hopefully we can catch up to them.
We got out of La Junta fairly early compared to some mornings… By then the group of cyclists going in the opposite direction were already gone. The had told us that we would pass another group that was a day behind them and possibly pass someone running across the world for peace. We only passed the other group of cyclists.
We took awhile to get to syracuse because the weather is starting to get a lot warmer because of our elevation drop and the heat wave. So it probably took Joe and I around 10 hours to get to Syracuse and it must have been 105 degrees there. As soon as we got there it was getting dark and you could see lightning in every direction. Joe and I were trying to hurry and grab food and get to our site which was on the lake. I swear we were almost biking sideways because the wind was that bad. The guy told us that it probably wasn’t a good idea to stay there that night and he took us to a nearby motel.
Finally at 10 pm we were in the right place.
120 miles logged
Okay so we are realllllllly behind on the site and very sorry for it. We left the motel late that day and road all day. The heat was crazy and we had to take a lot of stops. It was terrible now that we are hitting humidity. Kansas might lose elevation from west to east but its rolling hills and it does suck when the wind is against you. There was also a lot of heavy construction without alternate routes where the roads were stripped so we had to get a ride at one point. But we took a break around 3 and when we came out from the store the wind shifted and it was a nice ride the rest of the way. Dodge city has the BEST welcome sign and I can’t wait to get pics up on the site but definetly worth seeing. We spent the night at Water Sport Campground which was the best campground we had stayed at. We were lakeside ^^
Hey sorry all I just realized that we missed a post. After Dodge city we went to Hutchinson, KS. Turns out that Dodge city is the windiest city in the USA. The avg wind speed is 14 mph there. We found this out on the way to Hutchinson because we passed a wind farm with over 100 Windmills it was awesome. We rode 50 all day and it was pretty nice because the wind was finally with us for once. Another great thing about this day was how close together the towns are getting. We stopped at a small diner for lunch and a funeral concession passed us while we were inside. It was the longest concession i have ever seen. Apperently in the town we were in everyone attends the funerals. I thought that was pretty neat. The girl working (14) and her dad were the only ones who didn’t go. The sheriff blocked off all the roads and got them through to where they were going. We seem to be adjusting to the heat/humidity because we arn’t stopping as much anymore. Hope it keeps up.
Moran was indeed a long day and long miles as well. But it wasn’t to bad because it was more downhill than any other day we have had in Kansas, we passed a lot of cornfields and met a lot of farmers, but besides that it was a very long, hot and sweaty day. We left a little early and got in a little after dark because of the huge distance we were covering. We hope do go even further the next day!
130 miles=]
The land of the Ozarks! It reminds me of the Ozarks Trail brand…
About 135 miles logged again for the second day in a row and we can’t wait to go 55 miles to Fort Leonard Wood because were tired of such long miles. Joe and I are getting rashes everywhere because were starting to sweat more because of the humidity and hills. So we need to get a break in soon before it affects our riding performance. What really sucks is falling asleep sweating and waking up sweating, we are so excited to have a bed at Ft. Wood. Anyways it was a really exhausting day and we can’t wait to sleep. With that said goodbye
Yes! Finally at our first military post. We’ve finally made it to our room after riding back and forth across post because they took Joes expired military I.D. and then we didn’t know where to go to get our room… But either way we made it and I had a chance to visit my old AIT barracks from my initial entry training. We got food and washed everything we had while also watching tv from our air conditioned rooms all evening. We had a much better night=]
59 miles logged
Please disregard the timestamps!
The military lodging we had was great, and so was the start to the day, the roads were all very shady and cool leaving the Fort, it was a nice change from the constant beating sun on our bodies. We made it through several small towns and about 60 miles before I ended up breaking another spoke, the rim probably was not as severe as the last time when I had broken one but we weren’t going to take the chance. Joe got on the phone with his uncle whom lives a couple hours away and they came to get us and toke us to a campground which was still a little distance from the bike shop, the only bike shop for hundreds of miles. but we made it here alive which is nice.
62 miles logged, 53 mile car ride =P (no worries, we have gotten lost enough to make up for it!)
Okay, so the great news is we are done!! We finished on the 12th. Big sorry out to all of the people following this for not keeping up with the day by day posts. Its just really hard to after biking all day… it was really the last thing we wanted to do after. Biking all day. So I’m going to go through now and update everything to our last day in a day by day format. I am really sorry for not making sure the site was current.
With that said please ignore the time stamps on the posts.
So Bacorns post saying he broke another spoke was actually his first spoke break >.> was gonna edit it out but I didn’t want to confuse anyone. That happened 2 miles outside a town called Boss. The rim was really out of true and it looked terrible but we rode it into town anyways crossing our fingers for cell reception. The town consisted of a bar and a post office >.> we got a ride from someone in the bar to the next town which had cell signal then we called for help. Big thanks out to Uncle Wendall and Aunt Mael for coming out to take us to the bike shop.
They drove us to the campsite we were supposed to be at the next day so we had a place to stay. The campsite was 30 miles from the bike ship though >.> Bacorn was set on staying at that campsite though so they let us off there. Joe found us a ride in the morning and by 10 we were at the bike shop! I really don’t get it but every bike shop seems to open at 10am…
We walked into the small cluttered bike shop to find an older couple. We talked to them for a bit and they said they could get it fixed in a bit so we went and got food. We walked back when we were done eating and talked to them for a couple of hours while we waited for the rim to get fixed. When it was finally done we set out for the KOA 2 miles away only to realize when we got there that we didn’t have Bacorns helmet or camelbak… after some calls and searching we tracked them both back to the campsite from last night! 30 miles away! By that point it was about 5 and we couldn’t get there and back before dark on our bikes. The owner of the campsite said they could get it about half way but it wouldn’t be until 6 or 7… so searching desperately for a way to get there we called the bike shop and they offered us their truck. Way more then we could have hoped for but it was a big relief. We biked back and rode to get them. When we got back the owner asked us where we were going tomorrow and we told him Olney. Then to our surprise he said he was going there at 6 am and offered us a ride there. He had to pick up an order of bikes. At this point it was very tempting because it would put us back on track but it was easy to bike… the area was pretty flat. He said we could stay at his house and head out early then bike to the next place because we would have the time. We debated it for a while and bacorn kept looking to me to choose but I didn’t want the blame from him if I said yes so I told him I’m not choosing. Then the guy (Wiggs) asked us to help him mow some lawns he was hoping to get done before it got too dark but we had his truck. We agreed still debating on what to do and before we knew it this low end bicycle shop owner turned out to own about half the town! We decided to take the ride and he took us back to the koa to get our stuff after the lawns were done and then we went to his house. If you can call a lakeside mansion a house that is!! This guy had everything. A full dock with boats and jet skies, 3 garages full of go carts, golf carts, 4 wheelers… you name it he had it and it was amazing. Lesson learned here: NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER. We would really like to thank Wiggs for everything because it was amazing.
In the morning we took the ride to Olney and biked about 80 miles to Loogootee. We are sorry about taking the ride because there wasn’t a good reason to take it but this was our only ride like that on the trip. Sorry if anyone dislikes our choice.
Oh something else I should mention if anyone has their map out we aren’t going to Fort Knox at this point… sorry but that adds 8 days to our trip and it just isn’t worth it. We are so done with this trip. We put it into our phones and we were 860 miles from home about 1150 from done… so we are making a direct shot for the finish now!
Not Nashville TN lol. The ride that day sucked. We got up late at about 8 and didn’t leave until 9. Then we stopped for breakfast at some small rundown gas station and it was just a really bad choice. They didn’t have much of a selection so we ended up eating captain crunch, which turned out to be stale >.> Oh well. I ate a whole box of it. (it was a medium 6 serving box) After that we headed out an road for a bit on flat ground. The road didn’t have much of a shoulder but that wasn’t anything new. A couple hours later we stopped and had a real meal then we started hitting some steeper climbs. I remember the last climb of the day the most because we seriously thought about walking it. It was crazy steep but only about a mile long. It was the last hill before the town so it was a nice ride into the town after it. We stopped at subway as soon as we hit the town and then headed down the street a couple of miles to the campground.
We got another late start I think its just we never really adjusted to the time zone changes so we think its a late start when it isn’t. I don’t know but I’m happy we are able to keep making it to town at a decent time. I don’t honestly remember much from the actual day other then starting late, going through a town named Nebraska because i thought it was funny. Then getting to Aurora and seeing the amazing clock tower and having pizza at this great pizza place. Oh and the rain. We didn’t get rained on but the roads were soaked near the end of the day so the tires were kicking stuff up onto our legs which is really uncomfortable. The owner of the pizza shop said it was on the house. We talked to him for quite a while and Bacorn found out there was a Reds baseball game the next day near where we were going. I really didn’t think it was a good idea being we didn’t have the time or money for that adventure. We left the pizza shop and went down the street to the VFW to say hi, give thanks and let people know what we were doing but it was empty so we headed out to the campsite. It was funny because people kept saying 3 miles to it. We went 3 miles and called them and they said 3 more miles. Then after 3 more miles someone said it was another 3 miles… so it was actually 9 miles from the pizza shop in the end. It was an amazing campsite though. Could have been better if they had laundry or air conditioned bathrooms… but it was right on the Ohio river. We could see KY from our campsite and Ohio was 10 miles up the river!!! I spent most of the night on the dock talking to people on my phone and for some reason Bacorn watched Hostle 2 on his phone…
Looking back, this was probably the worst day of the trip. We started out great leaving Aurora we stopped at a Burger King about 12 miles into the day. Ate and tried to figure out where to stay. We were looking to go to Wilmington Ohio, about 80 miles. We cut down the avg daily miles because we were tired of killing ourselves when we really didn’t have to. We could not find a place to stay to save our lives. Every campsite was either full or closed because thier water was contaminated from a flood. We called churches without any luck, we called the YMCA and it was closed, we called everything you can possibly think of and we were getting no where. We spent about 2 hours at that BK looking for a place to go before we said screw it lets just get there. We biked about 5 miles and found the most pathetic welcome sign yet. Can’t wait to upload that picture
The day was a complete mess tring to stay north of Cincinnati. The roads sucked and it was alot of hills. At one point we came through an underpass and turned to find ourselves looking at an “asphalt wall.” It looked like someone found a cliff and poured asphalt off it until a car could go up it. I couldn’t begin to imagine what the grade was but there were signs prohibiting anything over a few tons to get near it. It was funny because Bacorn said “well im taking one for the team” and got off his bike. I replied “PEDDLE POWER!” and took off up the hill tring to make it. I kept shifting down tring to get up but there was no way. It was impossible. I got about 3/4 up the hill and saw that there was another equally steep and large hill after a small letoff and my bike stalled on me. I bearly got unclipped before I hit the ground lol. So I ended up walking the rest too. Joe laughed when he passed me walking up the hill because i killed myself tring to make it and he was fine. It sucks having to push those bikes up hills… That was the first time we had to though on the whole trip and sadly it wasnt the last time…. We got to the top and it kept going up. Not as steep but still up. We rode it and after another hour or so found ourselves at the Northgate Mall. We both had the same idea ADVENTURE lol. So we pulled over to the mall locked up outside applebee’s and went in. We very conveniently walked right into the food court
I had the most amazing boneless buffalo wings i have ever had there. They were big and amazing. Xtra hot.
And thats about the time everything fell apart. We called around some more tring to figure out where to stay because we thought of a few more things we didn’t try then we decided we should try to find a hotel. Not sure what any of us had for money we checked our bank accounts to find Bacorn had -50 $ in his bank account and i had 60! Bacorn freaked out and tried to figure out what to do. Next thing i know hes on the phone tring to get us a ride into pa because of our money issue. I called my dad and let him know what was going on and he said do what you have to do but he could tell i really didnt want to get any rides home over money issues so he posted onto facebook that we needed help and within a couple of hours we had a place to stay for the night at Spirit Fire Inc in Wilmington Ohio! He said don’t worry about the money and he put money into my account. Big thanks to Maggie, Kelly and the couple from Spirit Fire that we stayed with. It is a Native American Spiritual Resort. It was very very nice and they were so very kind to us. I can’t thank them enough for thier help and generousity. We hit one more hill that day that we had to walk after Bacorn decided to take a turn onto a bike path that put us about 6 miles in the wrong direction looking at another asphalt wall…. I really gotta learn to not follow him when he sees a bike trail… It never pays off. Spirit Fire was an amazing place to spend the night and they did everything they could to make us comfortable and help us as much as they could.
Again thank you all for your help on that day!
Sorry I am like 95% positive this was where we went. I do remember everything else during that day just not the name of the place we stopped… Sorry if it’s wrong. But anyway we started at Spirit Fire and when we woke up they made us breakfast and then made some phone calls to find us a place to stay. Before we left they had got in contact with Colleen Brown, a very nice person in Lancaster that said she would make sure we had a place to stay when we got there. We road all day straight to Washington Court House, OH (yes that is the name of the town) and ate at a recommended family diner. I can’t remember the name of it but the sign had that classic picture of the farmer and wife holding the pitch fork… If anyone knows the name of it please let me know. Colleen gave us another call while we were here and asked us how far away we are and gave us the game plan. She felt they couldn’t house us at their place due to space issues but they had gotten us a hotel and when we got there, they were going to meet us at the town entrance and take us on the bike trail to their house for dinner. So we set off pretty happy and rode to them. We got there at about 5 and sure enough they were waiting for us
The bike trail to thier house was great. – the crazy railroad crossing obstacle course… We got to thier place and got showered. We were rather supprised to find out what avid bicyclists they are and how many bikes they owned. The made us food and we talked for a few hours before we found out they had 3 high wheeler bikes!! We just had to try them out. For anyone who doesn’t know what they are here’s a picture
Yeah thats right I uploaded pictures
ill go through later and put more in older posts.
Anyways after that adventure david took us over to the hotel for the night which they payed for and we are very thankful for. Its amazing how nice people are. They washed our cloths, they gave us a place to shower, and then got us a hotel! We would have been perfectly fine with popping the tent in their back yard. But it was a great nights sleep and the makings for another great day.
For anyone that is interested Colleen has a blog and she updates it very frequently. I recommend everyone checks it out because its really good.

We were up by 7am today because David was coming to pick us up and take us back to his house to get our bikes by 8am. We ate at the hotel then got showers and gave him a call. Turned out he was already there and waiting for us. He had our riding uniforms all dry and ready for us so we went and put them on. When we got back we found out he had also already called the VFW and VA in Cambridge and had us a place to stay for the night with their help. He wanted to take us over to see his wife one last time at work for some more pictures then we set out for Cambridge.
David lead us out of town and got us on the right road with his amazing Trek Fixy. We left there very happy and loved how amazing everyone had been the last few days. We had gone through the last few days on pennies compared to what we had been spending. We rode 22 the whole day and hit some decent climbs but nothing that was too bad. the worse part was getting to the bottom of a hill and looking back up another…. We stopped in Zanesville for lunch and then made it to Cambridge by about 5. We really dont know how we keep pulling off these fast rides. When we got there we crossed the first bridge that was authorized by the Northwest Territory and it was built in 1803. I promise you though bridges now adays are much better. This was like one of those Asphalt walls. (not made of asphalt of course) Luckily it was very short. We rode uphill the whole way through town to meet our VA contact in front of city hall because he had an interview lined up for us with the local newspaper. We spoke with him and his friend who also works at the VA (whos names are currently getting away from me, I am very sorry) they offered us a ride from the hotel to eat at a place where the owner had heard about us already (thanks to the newspaper person) and agreed to put the bill on the house. 3 days of amazing people and experiences. After the interview we set out for the hotel and then got a ride back to the restaurant. It was a great day and i would again love to give a BIG THANKS to everyone who make it possible. This trip would not have been possible without people like yourselves.
Oh and this if you are tring to keep track of the date is offically August 2nd. I only remember this because my father was planning to meet up with us on August 3rd and follow us to the finish
This… This was a day… We didn’t wake up until like 830 and then by the time we got showered and ready it was 9ish then we went and ate at Cracker Barrel across the street and didn’t get on the road until almost 10. Our goal for the day was to make it to Weirton and Dad was planning to meet up with us by about 2 or 3. we biked to Cadiz and had Mcdonalds fastest 30 miles of the entire trip i think., and found out dad was going to erie (old age i guess) and that the VA from last night got us a place to stay in Weirton through the VA in Weirton. We got Dad back on the right course and set out again. before we knew it we were about 10 miles form Weirton. We really dont know how though. It was non stop up and down.. about 5 miles from where we were meeting the VA person Bacorn broke another spoke!!! He was climbing a hill and it just went >.> we loosened his back break all the way so it wouldnt rub and rode it out. Luckily Dad was in the area (well actually he passed us by this point…. but none of us knew it lol) we had 5 people stop and ask us if we needed help between the broken spoke and the VA person on the exit before Weirton (its a bit complecated getting to where we were supposed to be staying so she wanted to help us get there). When we got to the exit i called dad and found out he was past us and had him come back and then the VA person showed up (sorry i dont remember names >.>) We talked with her and told her what had happened and then we talked about the trip and before long dad showed up. Its amazing 20 miles on in a car is 20 mins but 20 mins on a bike is an hour or 2 depending on conditions…. yeah if we made that kind of mistake you could bet we would shed some tears lol. But anyways we loaded the bikes into my dads escape and got a ride the last few miles to keep him of the broken spoke. My dad ended up getting us a hotel for the night because the tent only fits 2 and he didnt want to stay in the car… Dan, my girlfriends brother gave me a call and came to meet up with us for dinner because he was in the area. We had a great dinner at Damon’s and then Dan and i went to find a GeoCache. We couldnt find it but had fun and talked until almost 2.
Okay so not exactly tyrone, but pretty damn close lol. We got up and went straight to Pittsburgh. It was the closest bike shop to us without back tracking. So after we got there and got the bike fixed we grabbed some gyros down the street of the bike shop (I dont remember the name at the min but i have their card at my house so i will put the name of it up later). This spoke fix took about 45 mins which was amazing. We were on the road by 1030 as i remember and we biked incredibly fast without the weight on us. (Thank you dad for carrying all the gear!) We flew from Pittsburgh to Nanty glo and stopped at Sheetz for food. It was still pretty early at that point (4 or 5) and we were feeling great so we set out to make it as far as we could. We made it short of Tyrone by a couple of miles and then we had dad drive us back to his house for the night. It was a great day – the insane climbs we hit. The one climb was 2 miles straight up. I really dont know how we did that. I honestly dont htink we could have if we had the weight on our bikes… We decided because we were making such great time and we hadn’t taken a break in the last few days to make the 5th our last day of biking for a few days. We needed the break and we felt it would be nice to spend time with the family and GF’s <3
WE ARE BACK! 37 DAYS, 3200ISH MILES AND WE ARE BACK!!!! GOD DOES IT FEEL GOOD
So anyways lol, Dad set up a News Station Interview at the house for 830 am and at 730 they gave us a call and said they were ready when we were… Asleep we told them they would have to wait XD It was a very short Interview without many questions and niether of us got a chance to see it sadly. After that was all over we went and ate at the truck stop where Bacorn wasted 5 dollars or so tring to win a pig from angry birds for his little brother out of a machine. After almost getting a handful of times it fell out of the cranes reach and we left. Dad then took us back to where we left off and we biked through tyrone and stayed on old 220 all the way to Lock haven. At one point a bit after Snappy’s some old guy beeped at us and got in a little fight with Bacorn, No worries though all talk
The day went really fast and we came 10 miles from State College but decided not to go out of our way to stop and say hi. We went straight through to Lock haven and made it there by 3pm! (when the interview with The Express was supposed ot be but it got moved back to 430 in the afternoon) With some time to kill we went through campus and stopped off at the ROTC house to say hi then joe went to visit his boss then we went down to the court house to talk with dave and met up with Sule who had bought us a pizza! It was great to see familier faces again it really was. Thanks Sule for the Pizza
we went up and spoke with dave who informed us after we were done with The Express interview we were to wait until 6 pm so the Mayor of the town could introduce us at a town concert!!! I thought this was great and was really excited for it. Bacorn on the other hand couldnt wait to run for it. He just wanted to be done. We held him there though and met the mayor. He introduced us to the whole crowd and announced that all of the money gathered from the concert for the night would go to our cause!! Big Thanks out for that and everyone who donated because that night raised us about 400$!!
After that we said goodbye and went our separate ways to be with family for a few days. We planned to start back up on the 10th and finish by the 12th.
Okay so my website hates me >.> for some reason i typed out the whole next day under a beautiful post like normal and then made the next post then the last post and this morning when i woke up and checked my work. this post was somehow gone… just gone. and there is no way to make a new post and put it where it belongs without deleating the other 2 so im going to put it right here… Sorry if you get confused but consider from here down to be another day. More specifically to be the 10th of august.
August 10th.
Okay so over break my bike went to the shop and got fixed. They set the tires back to true (they were getting pretty bad) and gave it a tune up then replaced my back tire because it was shot. All good accept for the fact that they put a 26 Ultra Gaterskin on when i only have 200 miles left and we have been riding only 23s >.> Ill get to why that is important in a bit but needed a place to put it.
We got up for an early start so we could catch wnep in williamsport. After Jim’s amazing interview:
http://www.wnep.com/videobeta/5a8f2a13-5317-42ad-aa0f-6cb13d36178e/News/Cross-Country-Bike-Trip-Nearing-End
we got on our way and headed over to Muncy for CO2 at the bike shop there. After that we went south for a bit and ended up near Milton i beilieve where we stopped for lunch. After lunch we hit some pretty bad climbs then went through a small town where a nail decided it to go through my shiny new ULTRA GATERSKIN TIRE >.> Nothing in the world could have stopped that flat… so i pulled off and we flagged down my father as he passed us so we could get stuff out to fix the tube. The first Gaterskin tire we got for bacorn’s bike way back in new mexico only got 2 flats but every time it got a flat we spent a good 10 mins tring to get it off. I hate those tires. With that said, ultra scared me. It wasnt much different though lol. We didnt realize it was a 26 until earlier that day and by then it was too late to do anything about it. After we got it off and changed the tube we were unable to get it back on though for some reason. Everytime we got the pressure over 30 psi the tire would take itself back off the rim. We figured something was wrong with it and after wasting 3 CO2 we gave up. We didn’t have an extra tire with us so my bike was done till we could get to a bike shop. In all i went a bit over 70 miles that day. With nothing else for me to do i put my bike in the car and Bacorn said he wanted to finish the ride so he took off and we followed. Well by follow we went about 10 miles infront or to the top of some rediculouse hill and waited for him to catch up and take a break. He hit some crazy climbs and im actually glad he kept riding that day
Anyways. We made it to Hazelton where we had planned to stop for the day and decided it was a good idea to just get to a bike shop for morning. Bacorn looked around and saw that there was a “Bike Shop” in Lehighton about 20 miles away so we got some pictures then headed out for Lehighton where we had some amazing wings at a bar. 35 cent wings ftw. After that we called it a night.
Well we got up around 8 and found out the “Bike Shop” was actually a Motercycle shop. Then we found the next closest bike shop other then the mountain biking rental places in Jim Thorpe (an amazing town that everyone should go research now!!! GO NOW GOOGLE IT!!!) was in Allentown. Dad gave us a ride to allentown and we got a new tire but during all of this the bike guy fixed the other tire for us >.> not really sure what was actually wrong with it but 2 for the price of one as far as im concerned. Bontrager R2 ftw
its yellow and I love it
After we got the bikes working we biked to a dennys close by and then headed out for our new destination NEW YORK!!!
The day was crazy and we had alot of climbs and at one point we got lost then found an amazing bike trail that actually put us where we were supposed to be MAGIC I TELL YOU MAGIC!!!! The only bike trail that paid off. And then we both almost died going down a super steep widey road. I hit about 45 and locked both my breaks tring to stop before a stop sign on this crazy grade and skidded about 50 feet through the stop sign. No traffic but i really dont know how i stayed on teh bike. Then down the next part of the same mountain side joe almost lost control and hit a wall. This is not a hill bikes should ever be one because we were hitting those speeds while riding our breaks. We crossed teh George Washington Bridge and made it to the hotel a bit after dark. While checking in however my dads dog gypsy was hit by a car after slipping out of his leash somehow! We took him straight to the local vet and luckily he was fine. They kept him over night but he is with us now
That part of the day sucked alot… My father had to bring the dog because he was going to be away from the house for 4 days without anyone to take care of him. We finally got to bed around 1am and had to get up by 6am to make sure the car was moved.
This day sucked. I’m not going to lie at all. It was a big relief to have everything over with but it was the SLOWEST 25 MILES of my life. Dad and i got up at 6am and went out for breakfast, Bacorn wanted more sleep. Then we went and picked up the dog who only suffered a few scrapes and did great over night. We got back to the hotel about 830 and got joe up. After a quick shower we got on the road. We headed out to get across the Brooklyn Bridge. I gave dad the gps and had him try to meet us on the other side at Henry street (some restaurant was there…) Joe was being difficult and couldnt decide where he wanted to eat so i just picked a place for dad to meet us. My family left the State College by 9 to get to us but his family wasnt planning to leave until 12 >.> so we had to kill time. alot of time. We flew through New york traffic like it was nothing and beat dad across teh bridge then we met up with him and sent him to a mcdonalds a few miles away. We spent about an hour there then decided to go down the street to Prospect park. The archway there is amazing and park was nice
After another 2 hours or so there everyone was close enough to the finsih line that we could bike the last 20 miles. Yeah 3 hours 8 miles… get over it lol. We sent dad to the finish line hoping we wouldnt need anything we didnt have with us and we set off going through back streets tring to get to the finish without the traffic. At some point we were complimented by a black woman in a black area of new york on being white. I think she was telling us we should leave quickly…. At anyrate with that oddity we got close to JFK and actually the ocean a few times but we said long beach was our end point so we had to make it tehre. We ran into an old taxi driver who gave us directions on how to get into long beach. When we met him he had a hotdog stand up on the side of the road and joe just had to stop so we did >.> another cyclist came up to us and asked us to help him fix a flat so Bacorn fixed it quick. The guy apperently ran out of CO2… After some food and good advice we set out yet again. (30 mins later…) and before we knew it we were on Long beach rd. way ahead of schedule!! His family was still lost in Manhattan… With that said we stopped at our last Diner. I couldnt tell you the name of it if i wanted I just know it was at the start of the road and it started with an M… oh well we killed an hour or so there and his cell phone battery died tring to give them directions. Unsure what to do we waited another 30 mins and decided to finish the last few miles. We got there threw our bikes down and were happy to be done. Seeing the ocean really wiped away everything. We somehow missed my family. They were there just in thier cars not looking for us. I called them with a strangers cell and went back to meet up with them. We agreed not to go to the beach until Joe’s family made it. The guy we borrowed the phone from was tring to buy Joe’s bike from him while i was gone though lol. After about 10 mins his family showed up and we got tons of pictures then headed down to the water. We started with our bikes in the water and we ended with our bikes in the water!
Lucy and Bacorn have the group pictures because Lucy (Bacorns gf) brought her amazing camera to take pictures. As soon as i get those i will put them up but for now heres these
Thank you dad for all of your support, this wouldn’t have happened without you behind me.
I hope that one day Disabled Vets wont have to go through what he did after his injury to get what they deserve.
